The Haard between Dudelange and Kayl is one of the country's most striking nature reserves: an open, almost Mediterranean-feeling landscape created by open-cast iron-ore mining. This eight-kilometre loop runs right through its heart.
Where excavators stripped the red earth until the 1970s, dry orchid meadows now grow, and butterflies thrive on the warm, barren slopes. The area belongs to the UNESCO Minett Biosphere reserve and is partly grazed by cattle that keep the landscape open.
The path alternates between open plateaus with views reaching into France and shaded stretches of woodland. A few short climbs on sometimes stony paths keep the loop varied without making it difficult.
